Chart Gunpowder Mills

The manufacture of explosives in Faversham began in the reign of the first Elizabeth, benefited from Huguenot know-how in the seventeenth century and later supplied gunpowder for Trafalgar and Waterloo. The mills fell into disuse when manufacture was transferred to the North-West in 1934. Rescued and restored by Faversham Society volunteers in 1987 Chart Mills, the oldest of their kind in the world, today attracts many visitors on week-ends from April to October.
